John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) Terminal Redevelopment

Client: American Airlines

Location: Jamaica, New York

American Airlines contracted DMJM Aviation to design and manage the IT installation of its new $1.3 billion terminal redevelopment project at JFK. This mega terminal covers 107 acres of land, providing 1.5 million square feet of terminal space and incorporating 36 gates with over 100 airline ticket counters and 43 self-service kiosks. These systems are connected through a complete fiber optics and copper cabling scheme, involving two main computer rooms and 27 telecommunication rooms.

There are nearly 500 airport communications system security door/card readers; over 2,000 computer devices, 350 closed-circuit television cameras with 60 monitoring screens, 1,700 telephone instruments, and 5,000 speakers for the public address system; air-to-ground and ground-to-ground radio systems; building management system; CNN A/P network; and CATV network, along with other smaller localized systems. A high-tech 24 hour a day, 7 days a week security operations center monitoring the entire facility was also included. Additionally, independent networks supporting the TSA and Customs and Border Patrol agencies for all of their telecom and security requirements were incorporated and built. All of the concessionaires are also supported via this high bandwidth network.
