CM Services for new 5th runway

DMJM Aviation, as managing partner of a joint venture, provides construction management services for ATL’s new $1.2 billion, 9,000-foot, CAT II/III runway and associated taxiways program. With six massive construction packages, key elements of the Runway 10-28 program include relocation of roadways and streams within the runway footprint, construction of taxiway and runway bridge structures over Interstate 285, maintenance of ten lanes of traffic and relocation into a tunnel under the runway, and importation and placement of 21 million cubic yards of fill. The sequence of construction along the runway is driven by a balance of risks associated with anticipated consolidation of underlying compressible materials, 30- to 80-foot-deep fills, utility relocation constraints, and site logistics demands.

ATL’s Runway 10-28 program was recognized by the Airports Council International-North America with the 2004 Environmental Achievement Award, in the category of large hub.

Key project facts

  • ATL’s new fifth runway is located south of Runway 9R-27L and to the southwest corner of future airport property line just north of I-285 and east of I-85
  • Key logistical issues include south airfield traffic and I-285 traffic during NAVAIDS and lighting placement over I-285 and I-85
  •  To import the required 21 million cubic yards of fill, a 26,000-foot-long conveyor moves dirt at a rate of one cubic yard per second and crosses over five active roads, including Interstate 285 and three state highways
  • Other special concerns include working around live VOR/ASR and localizers for Runway 9R-27L
  • The DMJM Aviation team established construction phasing for the contracts to optimize construction duration and provide internal milestones and progress-tracking metrics
